In regard to the proposed police training facility and shooting range at 379 Paderewski:

The police facility proposed to be located at 379 Padewerewski Drive has been the subject of recent media attention, which has reached Broadway-Fillmore residents–many of whom were unaware of the project. Since finding out about the facility just a few weeks ago, residents have begun circulating a petition critiquing the project, citing a lack of transparency and insufficient input from residents of the neighborhood.

The organization Liberation for One, Liberation for All (L.O.L.A) has always held the belief that those most impacted should lead the struggle. We prioritize listening to and working with neighbors in the immediate neighborhood surrounding 379 Paderewski Drive, and will support them in ways they see fit. In response to conversations with community members in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood, and after thoughtful consideration, LOLA has decided to cancel the Community Town Hall planned for August 23rd and are working with residents to support their recent efforts. Our intention with this town hall was to offer an accessible platform for community voices to be heard by elected officials, and we are excited to see Broadway-Fillmore residents working to ensure their voices are heard.

We encourage the Common Council, especially Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski, and other stakeholders to hear out the concerns of Broadway-Fillmore residents, ensuring that all residents of the neighborhood are able to share their thoughts and concerns about the project. In addition, we encourage Councilmembers from all districts to vote against the proposed zoning amendment, set to be voted on September 2nd. We urge Councilmembers from all districts to encourage Fillmore councilmember Nowakowski to hear out his constituents.

Residents of the City of Buffalo, especially those most impacted by the facility, including Broadway Fillmore residents, Black and brown communities, immigrants and refugees, and other communities which have been historically divested from, should have a say in whether our tax dollars are used to build a $5 million police training facility and shooting range. LOLA will continue informing the broader Buffalo community about the proposed facility and advocating for investment in our communities.
